The Imola Circuit, established in 1953, has a rich history in motorsport, hosting various events, including Formula 1 from 1980 to 2006. After a period of modernization, it rejoined the F1 calendar in 2020 as the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. Since 2024, Imola has also been part of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), showcasing endurance racing alongside its historic legacy.
Early years (1953-1972)
Imola opened in 1953, originally for motorcycles and later cars in 1954. The early circuit was high-speed with few chicanes, which posed safety challenges due to limited run-off areas. In 1963, Imola hosted its first non-championship Formula One race, with Jim Clark taking the victory.
Chicane introduction (1973-1979)
Chicanes were added in 1973 to slow the track at dangerous spots like Variante Alta and Bassa. The 1979 Dino Ferrari Grand Prix, a non-championship race, was won by Niki Lauda.
First F1 era (1980-2006)
Imola joined the Formula 1 calendar in 1980 with the Italian GP, later hosting the San Marino GP. Known for its tough corners, it saw tragic events in 1994 with the deaths of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger, prompting safety upgrades such as chicanes at Tamburello and Villeneuve.
Modernization (2007-2019)
Dropped from F1 after 2006, Imola underwent major renovations, including pit lane upgrades. Financial and managerial challenges affected the circuit's revival.
F1 return and FIA WEC debut (2020-Present)
In 2020, Imola rejoined F1 as the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix due to the COVID-19 scheduling changes. It remains on the calendar, blending modern safety with its original challenging character. Since 2024, Imola has been included in the FIA World Endurance Championship calendar, adding to its legacy as a premier motorsport venue.
